ABOUT CAMP
Since 1914 North Shore Holiday House, an independent, not-‐for-‐profit organization, has provided free summer experiences to more than 200 Long Island children each summer from low-income communities. Accredited by the American Camping Association, we engage campers in traditional camp activities. Our camp serves girls ages 7-11 from underserved families whose incomes meet the USDA guidelines for free or reduced lunch. Camp is 100% free of charge to participants. During four, two-week sessions, over 200 girls from Long Island make new friends, learn new skills, and have fun. Camp is 100% free of charge to participants.

We are constantly improving and expanding our various camp programs and activities. Daily activities include arts and crafts, games, sports, recreational swimming, dance, self-esteem, theater, science, and field trips.
Our Literacy Program is reinforced with visiting authors, illustrators, storytellers, and other performers. Our Science Program seeks to develop a greater awareness and respect for campers’ surroundings, as well as integrating caring attitudes about the environment in their own homes and communities. Our very popular Cultural Arts Program has included African drummers & musicians to multi-cultural storytellers and dance/theater company performances.
Campers learn about international relations and cultural differences from counselors who in past years have come from England, Hong Kong, South Africa, Australia, Guyana, Sweden, Ireland, Russia, Romania and Germany. These counselors share the fabric of their culture with the campers through play, song and explaining cultural traditions. The small size of our camp affords the girls the personal attention of the counselors and staff in a nurturing, family atmosphere.

At Holiday House, girls live in small groups where they learn to develop self-confidence, independence and teamwork skills. Educational programs promote environmental awareness, cultural arts and physical fitness in a fun, safe, supportive environment. Each summer, 200 girls make new friends while participating in many different fun and exciting activities.
Our goal is to expose our campers to a wide range of programs and activities in order to increase cultural awareness, physical fitness and camaraderie. Campers participate in a wide range of activitie designed to expand their world-view and interests and to develop and sharpen their artistic and athletic skills. Campers learn about different cultures, music, dance styles and acting techniques. Campers also have the opportunity to swim nearly every day while at camp! Every camper is swim-tested on the very first day of camp in order to determine his skill level, and all campers have the opportunity to swim every day when at camp.
Campers live, play and learn together in small groups called bunks, consisting of no more than ten campers placed together based on their age and interests. Each bunk group has its own counselors who attends all bunk activities and provides constant and consistent care and attention. Two bathhouses provide bathrooms and hot showers just outside the cabins. All of our bathrooms have individual stalls and shower units. Campers are encouraged to be a part of the camp community by helping out with simple clean-up tasks. A small portion of each camper’s day is spent working together with bunkmates to ensure that sleeping and activity areas are tidy. Campers are taught to keep track of their personal belongings, make their beds and keep their clothes organized.
