ABOUT CAMP

Kids come to TIC not just to explore technology, but for a kind of personal attention, excitement and creativity rarely found elsewhere. Our half day sports program offers a physical challenge to balance the mental stimulation of the technology half day. Campers are divided into two age groups: when the Juniors are in technology the Seniors are in sports; after lunch the groups switch places, so that each camper gets three hours of technology instruction and three hours of sports each day.

TIC’s 4:1 camper/counselor ratio with smart, caring staff allows campers to create unique projects using relevant programming languages or multimedia software.

The answer is simple. At TIC, kids get to:

  • choose their own goals in technology and sports;

  • develop their unique personal visions;

  • go as far and as fast as they want to.

TIC is not school — it's CAMP!

Learning to program a computer, rather than just passively responding to it, is an intellectual challenge which can be experienced on many levels, from the very simple to the extremely sophisticated. The intense interaction that occurs between kids and computers has positive benefits:  it can improve math and reasoning skills, reading ability, and ignite a positive attitude toward learning. TIC Summer Camp’s philosophy is that intellectual attention, independence, affectionate appreciation, creative learning, and fun all go together.

We are not only about technology, but about content: campers learn geometry intuitively while programming with LOGO turtles; they learn fundamentals of sports through games and gain physical confidence; they act out camper-created skits and plays on bare sets; kids film from original scripts and learn to edit their movies. Our counselors—who are wonderful role models—believe that real caring means not only hugging kids, but respecting them as creators, athletes, actors, and learners.

At TIC Summer Camp, the individual needs of the child come first. In technology, a ratio of one counselor to every four campers allows real individualized instruction, giving each child all the time and attention he or she needs. In the sports program, a rich array of choices allows every child to grow athletically, doing what he or she likes to do best – or trying something new. TIC is an opportunity for children to learn now and for the future – and have fun in a supportive and joyous camp atmosphere.

AT TIC — KIDS LEARN BY HAVING FUN!

The secret of TIC's success over the past three decades is our wonderful staff. Our personal kind of teaching requires a high counselor to camper ratio: 1:4 in technology, 1:6 in athletics. TIC chooses staff for their talent, energy, sensitivity, and desire to share their enthusiasm with kids.

Our counselors attend some of the best universities and colleges in the U.S. and around the world. They are highly skilled in technology and/or athletics. But it is their caring— about kids and teaching—that makes them so effective and adored by the campers.

Counselors must submit a completed application and three references to be considered for employment. Each candidate is personally interviewed and carefully reviewed for knowledge in their area of expertise AND aptitude for teaching AND their love of kids. All staff are screened and required to complete a full background check.

Through three decades of experience, we know the magic happens because our staff are highly trained and imbued with the TIC spirit, pedagogy and philosophy.  With over 40 hours of training in a variety of formats (online training before camp begins, 28 hours on-site staff training, and weekly in-service workshops throughout the summer), our staff are ready to focus on what is important – CAMPERS!

ACTIVITIES

At TIC, every camper chooses ONE tech option per session. Campers concentrate on in-depth projects of their own design, along with a partner or a group, for two weeks. This enables campers to get more than just a superficial "taste" of different technologies. Campers may choose to do a different option in each TIC session they attend, or deepen their skills through repeating a tech option in another session. Since the instruction is individualized, there is never any repetition— they learn only what they want or need at any point.

Rather than theory, we encourage and practice “hands on.”  Each TIC camper learns enough content to produce a project tailored to his or her own interests. Each group is taught by a highly qualified counselor whose enthusiasm for technology inspires campers to question, to experiment, and to create.  The curriculum is determined by what project campers want to write – with lots of models of what is possible for beginners, and no rigid lockstep learning.

With a 4:1 teaching ratio, every TIC camper gets the personal attention they deserve, and have the benefit of collaborating in pairs or small groups to solve problems together, learning intellectual teamwork and cooperation and creating exciting and original creations.

TIC sports are spirited, age appropriate, and change with the enthusiasms of the campers. All campers get three different sport activities daily on a rotating basis, depending on the weather, facility, and interests of the group. Our goal is to expose campers to all different types of activities in a fun, safe environment.

JUNIORS (our younger campers) play a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional sports with at least one choice period each day. Some juniors have little experience with sports and enjoy our noncompetitive games; others are eager athletes who strive to win and learn great sportsmanship. All enjoy the high spirits on the field and in the gym.

SENIORS (our older campers) also get three activities each day, including a daily choice period. In addition, seniors choose a "Focus" sport after the first day, allowing daily instruction and exposure to practice and learn new skills and techniques on the sport of their choosing for one hour each day.

At TIC, there is something for everyone; even kids who haven’t had the most positive experiences with team sports. We are known for our crazy, original games based on popular trends to help them get moving, excited and involved. Hunger Games, Quidditch, Gaga, Jugball, Bob the Builder, and "Minecraft" are just some examples of how we mix basic skills involved in traditional sports with popular topics.

We aren’t all fun and games – oh wait, yes we are! Basketball, Soccer, Frisbee, Flag Football, Volleyball, Hockey, and Handball are also some of the popular traditional sports that campers play on a rotating basis. Competition is a part of any sport but our focus is to make sure campers are moving and having a blast, whether it is a traditional sport or crazy game.

Tennis and Drama occur during one hour of the athletics portion of the day. These activities may conflict in the athletic schedule, so choose only one per session.

DRAMA During the athletic half of the day, we offer one hour of drama daily at all three camp sites. Campers prepare for an original production using creative games and activities as well as improvisational techniques. Campers are exposed to the creative process and develop their acting and vocal skills. Productions are camper driven, allowing for ownership and pride, when they perform for their parents and the whole camp on the last day of the session. Campers who choose Drama must be present on the final day of the session. Drama costs $30 extra per session.

TENNIS We offer mostly beginner and some intermediate tennis instruction at all three sites. Campers walk to the courts in DC, and we bus VA and MD campers to courts several blocks away for the one-hour daily lesson. Tennis lessons, at a beginning or intermediate level, cost $75 extra per session.
