ABOUT CAMP
Clearwater is an overnight summer camp for girls ages 8-16. We’re nestled in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, surrounded by the crystal clear water of Tomahawk Lake. Clearwater is one of the original great girls’ camps, building confident and resilient young women for eighty years. We limit our size to less than 100 campers per session with 4-6 girls and one counselor per cabin to promote our deep sense of community.
Our extraordinary location includes 3300-acre Tomahawk Lake, 200 acres of adjacent nature conservancy land, and our own private 5-acre island. We offer dozens of activities for all ability levels including everything from horseback riding, sailing, and water skiing, to archery, swimming, arts & crafts, tennis and more! Every one of our campers gets the chance to go on a canoeing or backpacking trip, and our older campers get a chance to try sea kayaking in the Apostle Islands, hiking Isle Royale National Park, canoe the Boundary Waters, or sail Lake Superior.
We combine an extraordinary setting, outrageous fun, and lifelong friends—unforgettable! Clearwater is ACA accredited.
One of the best ways to learn about Clearwater is to visit during the summer; we love showing off our beautiful camp! Families are invited to meet our staff and to see our program first hand.
We also invite you to take a virtual tour which was filmed on a typical diamond day primarily during rest hour when all campers are with their cabins. You can also explore camp by clicking through the vintage “Voyageur Chart of Clearwater” below, taken from a woodblock print created in the 1930s.

ACTIVITIES
Canoeing ? Fishing ? Kayaking ? Sailing ? Swimming ? Water Skiing & Wake Boarding
Imagine…it’s a perfect diamond day at Clearwater, and Tomahawk Lake is twinkling right in front of you, full of possibilities. Our waterfront program is impressive, meeting the comprehensive safety standards established by the American Camp Association. All aquatic activities are supervised by staff certified in American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard Certification. Campers pass a preliminary swim test to be able to safely participate in waterfront activities.
Canoeing
The classic summer camp activity, and no wonder–there’s no better way to travel. It’s all in the stroke; learn smooth moves in our protected cove, then have the opportunity to take extended overnight canoe trips.
Fishing
Cast your line into Tomahawk Lake and develop a skill that could turn into a passion for a lifetime!
Kayaking
There’s nothing like skimming across the water in a kayak, so close to the water you feel part of it. Learn to do a ‘wet exit’ then you can join this favorite camper activity. For more skilled kayakers, the Eskimo roll is a great goal to achieve. Develop your skills on Tomahawk, then progress to using sea kayaks on trips.
Sailing

Clearwater’s sailing program has 15 boats: two “E” scows, seven “C” scows, two “X”s, one M-16 and three Sunfish. Campers may earn”crew” status up to the rank of “skipper”; which involves learning knots, parts of the boat, sailing strategy, sailboat maintenance, and rowing.
Skills progression begins at crew and goes up to regatta skipper. All campers are invited to participate in Sunday regattas – a favorite activity at camp! Campers progress from sailing with a counselor to skippering their own boat under supervision.
Swimming
Need some help with your swimming? Tomahawk Lake is the perfect place to perfect your stokes. Swimming is a combination of instructional swimming, water games, synchronized swimming, diving, and fitness.
Water Skiing & Wake Boarding

Clearwater has three ski boats dedicated to teaching campers how to ski and wake board. You can even try to “wake surf” behind our newest Nautique that creates a special wake, just for that purpose! Every camper may sign up, and older campers may sign up for Extended Water Skiing. Once campers master the basics, they can practice dropping a ski and slaloming. Advanced skiers love skiing on trick skis, including a canoe paddle!

Whether you’re saddling up for the first time or are an experienced horsewoman, our English riding program is fun and challenging. Experienced instructors teach riding fundamentals at three different levels – beginner, intermediate, and advanced – on wonderful horses in a variety of sizes from pony on up to 16 hands. Clearwater is also fortunate to have miles of groomed trails through the woods that give campers the opportunity to enjoy seeing deer and other wildlife from the back of their horse!
Clearwater’s philosophy of giving each girl the chance to try new things at camp includes riding. This is why basic riding is included for all campers, whether it’s just once while they are at camp or once a week. This opportunity teaches campers the basic skills needed to safely control their horse in the arena or on the trail and is for campers who enjoy riding occasionally for recreation.
Extended Riding
The Extended Riding program is available for an additional fee and is for campers who want to improve their riding and learn as much as they can while at camp. These campers will be scheduled for riding several times a week. Campers will be placed in class with others wh
o ride at a similar ability and move along through the levels as they progress from being able to steer and control their horse at a walk, then trot, and then canter using the correct position, cues, and aids.
The advanced class also works on jumping from simple cross rails and gymnastics to jumping courses. Horse care and barn management are also taught, as there is so much more involved in having a horse than just riding one. It’s important for our campers to feel comfortable and enjoy their time being around the horses…not just on them. Extended riders will also enjoy a Thursday afternoon Packout at the barn along with other opportunities to help them soak up as much horse time as they can while at camp.
