Camp Ewalu is a year-round ministry that primarily serves over 200 Lutheran congregations in Eastern Iowa with 1,000 youth participating in our summer programs and nearly 1,000 more through our Day Camp evangelism program. We also see 2,500 environmental education students and nearly 6,500 additional youth and adults who come to renew and grow in their faith. Wow, hard to believe we started as a 2-week, summer-only camp that ministered to only 150 youth...

What makes Camp Ewalu's summer ministry unique and highly regarded is it's decentralized, small group camping environment. The advantages of this style include more camper participation, more counselor responsibility, and greater utilization of the whole facility.  Though there have been some modifications to the individual programs, the overall format of the summer camp program has remained the same.

SUMMER CAMP

ummer is on it's way! Ewalu staff have been hard at work processing registrations, visiting churches, and recruiting young men and women to serve as counselors and leaders for youth! About 1,000 youth come to Camp Ewalu each summer and witness God’s love in action. We invite you and your camper to come and see how Christ leads us to live in God’s amazing grace!

Loving God and loving others sounds simple, but living it out gets more complicated.  People of faith have often been called to do difficult things - to pack up and go when called, to speak difficult truths in challenging situations, to believe in God's promises, and to love even our enemies.  This summer, campers will learn about their calling to love God and others from people of the Old Testament who struggled to do the same.

Why Go to Summer Camp?Simply put: youth will grow in faith, experience Christian community, enjoy outdoor adventures and make new friends! Campers will have the opportunity to live and play in the great outdoors with our energetic, well-trained, and fun summer staff. Activities (and the whole camp milieu itself) are designed to be "brain-friendly," as described by Rev. Dr. Paul Hill of Vibrant Faith Ministries.At Ewalu youth will learn unforgettable songs, chat by the campfire, share stories, learn about God, and enjoy fantastic new adventures only possible at summer camp. Camp Ewalu is also ACA-accredited, consistently meeting rigorous national standards for safety, training, facilities, documentation, quality and staff certifications by the American Camping Association.

ACTIVITIE

Camp Ewalu offers environmental education experiences that teach a greater awareness and appreciation for the natural world and each other. The Ewalu staff is available to teach environmental classes, facilitate groups on the ropes course, and take care of your group's every need.

Accommodations

Enjoy over 550 acres of forests and prairies, miles of beautiful hiking trails, streams and rivers, rock outcroppings, and the woodlands of the Maquoketa River valley. Ewalu's lodges and cabins can sleep over 170 people for your schools visit. Food service staff serve delicious home-style meals. Camp highlights include outdoor recreation areas, a volleyball court, archery range, canoes, high and low ropes course, cross country skis, snowshoes, hiking, and more.

Outdoor education programs can be customized to fit your school's needs! Our facility is available for day-trips, overnight stays and even week-long programs. Our Environmental Education Director is also available to come to your school for a presentation. Call for open dates, and schedule your best-ever field trip. The students will learn a lot - and love it!
