ABOUT CAMP

There are many new and exciting things happening within Doxa’s Camps program in 2015!

The Camps Program provides the opportunity for more than 5000 students, teachers and support staff from the state’s most disadvantaged schools to enjoy an educational and enriching camp experience that their life circumstances might otherwise preclude. Students from all parts of Victoria are able to participate in valuable experiential learning, which enhances their classroom curriculum.

Doxa runs two camps with one in Elizabeth Street, Melbourne which is predominantly attended by children and young people from rural and regional areas. The other camp is on the Loddon River at Malmsbury which is attended by children who live in more urban areas around Victoria.

Although Doxa Youth Foundation receives no government funding for any of its programs, we are still committed to subsidising 60% of the standard camping industry rate for each booking to ensure that no child misses out due to financial disadvantage.

With a comprehensive offering of activities now available to schools, Doxa is able to provide an all-encompassing experience to its campers in a unique and interactive learning environment.

This year Doxa’s Malmsbury Camp will offer six new high ropes activities including abseiling, the Climbing Tower and the Milk Crate Stack team challenge. The low ropes course was also reinstated with a new framework and apparatus built towards the end of last year and has since commenced operation in 2015.

The Journey Program at Doxa's Malmsbury site is a multi-day leadership focused expedition along the Goldfields Trail. The program is open to students in Years 7/8 and has equipment to accommodate up to 60 young people on simultaneous multi-day hikes. The hike itself crosses the Dry Diggings Heritage Trail which showcases old relics, mukluk heaps, mine shafts, eroded gullies and many more visual examples of the booming gold mining history from the 1850s. Students will be fully self-sufficient and carry all the necessary gear and materials to undertake the expedition. The focus of the Journey Program is to challenge the student’s resilience, foster teamwork, enhance leadership qualities, develop interpersonal skills and teach them about local and Indigenous heritage and sustainability through the interaction with the natural environment.

The City Camp program has some great additions to the already engaging, fun and educational activities currently on offer. With a greater focus on providing campers a valuable insight to the inner city landscape, groups will this year participate in a classroom session with The Big Issue to better understand homelessness and marginalisation in Melbourne. We have also introduced an Urban Scrawl laneway tour to not only showcase some of Melbourne’s renowned street art, but to also facilitate discussions about graffiti awareness and the differences of each.Other activities added to the program include visiting The Melbourne Star, having fish and chips at the iconic St Kilda Beach and understanding the sustainability issues of living in Melbourne.

Doxa’s City and Malmsbury campsites are now available for hire on weekends and school holidays. As an ideal option to host a variety of occasions, including a community group event or team building workshop, both venues provide comfortable and fully equipped facilities to suit all your event requirements. Our venues are competitively priced and we would be more than happy to work with you on securing a package that caters to your specific needs. Education is a gateway to so many paths throughout life. Knowing how to help young people with a multitude of issues and experiences is a challenging task, however it is every child’s right to be educated. The Doxa School Bendigo provides an engaging and innovative alternative to mainstream education for vulnerable young people aged between 12-18 who are at risk of not completing their education. Since opening its doors in 2006, the school has provided supportive and individually tailored programs to assist the students’ success. The Doxa Bendigo School aims to reignite young peoples' interest and engagement in education by offering flexible, inclusive and dynamic programs. The staff at the school recognise each young person's potential and wholly supports their pathway for future education, employment and success.

Programs

The school offers a junior program for students aged between 12-15 years and a senior vocational program for students aged between 15-18 years. Typically the programs run for six to twelve months, after which time students are supported through a transition period when they return to their former mainstream school, other appropriate setting or vocational pathway.

Results

A key indicator of the success of the school has been the level of student attendance in our programs. In the last twelve months attendance is averaged at over 80%. This figure includes students who have not previously attended a school for many years and other students whose attendance in mainstream schooling was less than 50%.

Community

The school community continues its commitment to support students as they make better choices and changes to their lives that enhance them as individuals. Each student at the school has faced different problems and circumstances that have influenced their experience of school, their learning capabilities and their emotional and physical health. Students who have suffered trauma or drug and alcohol abuse, depression and anxiety find school very difficult and challenging. We have continued to provide a safe and encouraging place of learning for all these students in the regional community.

“Doxa lets me be myself and they don’t judge.”

Case Study

Ed is a 15 year old boy who presents significant behavioural, emotional and social issues. His family come from a low socio-economic background and he has experienced significant physical violence. Prior to coming to Doxa he had transitioned through four schools due to relocation, eviction and the breakdown of the family unit. He has used marijuana since he was 11 years old after being introduced to it by a family member.Ed had refused to attend school and spent a large percentage of his time socialising with older people who participated in anti-social behaviour, along with considerable police involvement. He had a limited connection with his peers at the school where he was enrolled, primarily due to the lack of attendance. This lack of connection also extended to the broader school community and significantly impacted upon his ability to learn. With support from youth work outreach staff at Doxa he is working on his underlying issues that drive his need to use illicit substances. He is starting to talk about the piece inside him that is "damaged” and his desire to seek help to mend it. He knows his traumatic past can’t be taken away and that it is now part of who he is, however he doesn't want it to control his future life choices. He wants to take control.Over his past six months at Doxa Ed has learned that the school is a safe environment for him to slowly take control of his life. Having one class teacher, clear expectations and boundaries, he has thrived in the classroom. Academically he has achieved and has positively engaged in his learning process. His family is also connected to the school and is involved in the development and ongoing monitoring of his Independent Learning Plan. With the support of youth work outreach staff, the future is becoming clearer for Ed – he will be supported as he continues on his learning journey. Ed is working towards getting an apprenticeship in the building industry and to do this he would like to continue his involvement with Doxa and transition into VCAL at the Doxa School Bendigo next year.
