ABOUT CAMP
Timberlane is a place to be yourself, have fun, and make the best friends you'll ever have. In all aspects, our camp is genuinely non-competitive, meaning that we place the value of teamwork, sportsmanship, and fun waaaaay above all else. On the few occasions that we play games with other camps, we hold no tryouts! Anyone who wants to play is on the team and gets an equal amount of playing time.
We believe the summer at camp should be filled with experiences that develop self-confidence and self-esteem, and teach us how to build each other up. That's where true friendship derives, and that's what enables us to accept new challenges and adventures!

It's hard to go wrong in the north woods! We have over 300 wooded acres and 2000 feet of shoreline on a gorgeous, isolated lake. We live in cabins that overlook the lake and have electricity, toilet, and shower facilities in each one. In spite of these "amenities", camp is a very rustic setting, true to the feel of our natural environment. Besides us, camp is home to deer, fox, squirrels and chipmunks, bald eagles, and a myriad of other wildlife.
We're at the front of camp now, but there's so much more to Timberlane. Wanna see it? Just click on the icon below, and you'll get a better glimpse at just a few of the highlights. You should also check out our incredible Tour Page.
OUR ACTIVITIES...
BRING YOUR SENSE OF ADVENTURE!
This is not your ordinary, everyday sports camp. You'll have the opportunity to do things you've always loved, but to also try things you've never done before! You may check out our water activities on Lake Towanda, get involved in some adventure programs, have some fun in our land activities or traditional activities, or maybe indulge your creativity in our crafts program. Sure camp is fun if you're into sports, but it's also a place for everyone and anyone to get involved, have a blast, and learn all sorts of new skills.
A FREE-CHOICE PROGRAM.....ALMOST.
Nearly everything a camper does is something he chooses. We have only a few basic requirements. That's not very much when you consider how many different things you'll be doing.
SWIMMING: Like any lake-oriented camp, we must be sure our campers have a minimum proficiency in swimming. We watch all of the campers swim during the first few days of camp, and assess their skills. Some campers are just like fish, and require no instruction from us. Many campers swim well enough to be safe in the water, but still need a bit of instruction. Those campers will be required to take swim instruction until they complete the American Red Cross Level 4 instruction program, but they will still be able to sign up for water activities like water-skiing, sailing, canoeing, etc. And some campers just haven't had the chance to practice their swimming very much. Those campers will also be required to take swim instruction until they complete the ARC Level 5 program. And once their skills are strong enough to make them safe in the water, they too will be free to take water activities. See how simple that is?
GET ACTIVE! We are concerned that some kids aren't as physically active as they should be. So we do require that 2 of each camper's 4 activities involve some movement. This doesn't have to be sports per se, but something active. That can include things like Fishing, Sailing, and Archery, as well as more obvious choices like land sports, rock climbing, mountain biking, waterskiing, etc.
O.W.L.S.: Our trips program is very extensive and provides some unique opportunities for our campers. To prepare for these wilderness experiences, everyone needs training! All first-year campers will take O.W.L.S. as one of their four activities durng their first week of camp. During that time you'll receive training in canoeing, campcrafts, and most importantly, MINIMUM IMPACT skills to teach you how to minimize (or even eliminate) your impact on the natural environment. Once that's finished, you're eligible for any of our beginning level trips. For more information about our wilderness trips program, click HERE.
A SIMPLE SYSTEM OF SELECTION!
We sign up for activities 3 times per each 4-week session. Each of these times is called an Activity Series. Each Activity Series includes 4 activity instruction periods, each an hour long. If you do the math correctly, that would mean a camper could choose 12 different activities in 4 weeks. Usually, though, campers find one or two things that they really enjoy, and they can repeat those over more than one Activity Series. They cannot, however, take the same activity twice in one Activity Series.
The sign-up process usually takes place during Rest Period. Each camper will enter our Lodge, and there they will find counselors sitting at tables signing up all the different activities. The campers simply talk to the counselor signing up the activity he wants to choose, and the counselor writes his activity name on the camper's sign-up sheet (See Below). Once all four periods are filled on the camper's form, he shows it to either Mike or Leslie so they can look it over and maybe make some suggestions. Those suggestions might include trying a more diverse schedule, or something the camper has never done before. Mike and Leslie will also have any recommendations the camper's parents may have for activity selection, and will share those recommendations at that time. THE FINAL CHOICE IN ACTIVITY SELECTION IS ALWAYS THE CAMPERS'!And that's how it works.
