Canoeing

Canoeing is a great way to explore water environments. We use various local sites for learning new skills, playing games and exploring the marine environment.

Our fresh water lake provides the ideal opportunity for students to learn new skills and safety procedures. There are six canoes and groups of up to sixteen students can be handled at a time.

Archery
The archery course is a popular activity for students enabling them to have fun, gain a new skill and develop confidence in a new sport.

Sensory Course
This low level obstacle course is designed to build communication skills, confidence and trust between students. Students undertake this course in pairs, one is blindfolded and must complete the course by following a rope through a series of challenging obstacles. His/her buddy ‘talks’ the student through the obstacles without touching or giving physical support. This course is also situated on-site at Kianinny Resort and does not require transport.

Team Rescue
This is a small group cooperation activity with achievement through teamwork and initiative. This special challenge course is built at a remote location on Kianinny’s 100 acres. In small groups of eight to sixteen students, they work together to provide basic first aid then bring out an injured student (on a stretcher) through a number specially designed obstacles.

Low ropes
This activity brings the best out of a group and individually, the course has a number of elements that challenge and develop a group. Using a technique of progression the students apply themselves through each initiative towards the goal of the “Ultimate Challenge”.

Raft Building

This is a very popular activity that is great for personal initiative, water safety, and working as a team; it’s about having fun and building confidence without realizing it.

Night Walk:
A popular night activity is our camp fire and ‘Possum Spotting’ walk after dinner. Kianinny’s instructor leads the students (with their torches) along the bush tracks (on site) pointing out the nocturnal wildlife of Kianinny. The walk ends at our camp fire site where the students enjoy toasting marshmallows by the fire. (weather and fire restrictions permitting)

Basic Orienteering

This activity introduces students to map reading and locating places on a map. Students are given a list of environmental questions, and find the answers to these on signs which are marked as control points on the maps. There are four sets of questions, with a corresponding map: trees, shrubs, birds and animals.

Basic orienteering is run as a team / partner event that develops map reading skills, and partner communication.

Advanced Orienteering
Score orienteering is designed within the native bushland at Kianinny for the novice and more advanced map reader, each orienteer is given a topographic map with various control points, these control points hold a certain point value and once located, the answer to a question is found. The orienteer must constantly concentrate, make decisions, and write a list of their answers while racing against the clock to finish with the most points.

Unguided activities

Kianinny also has the following activities that do not require an activities instructor:

Rock Climbing Wall
This newly constructed facility provides an exciting and fun activity. It requires low level supervision and is both challenging and confidence building as an individual or team event.

Beach Volleyball
A full size ‘beach volleyball’ court is located in the games area for organized or ‘free time’ activities.

Swimming Pool
Standard resort size swimming pool is available for students and teachers for use during their free time.

Tennis Court
A full size tennis court is available for organized group activities as well as for use by the students during their free time.

Fishing

The Lake at Kianinny has a variety of fish, turtles and ells. The main fish species is the Silver Perch and these provide excellent fishing entertainment. However, while we do present an achievement award to students successful in landing a fish, we do have ‘catch and release’ policy. (Fishing gear is not provided by ‘Kianinny’.)

Basketball Jnr.
A junior basketball court has been installed for competition sports for the primary school groups. This court is also popular with the students during their free time.

Basketball Senior
The senior basketball court (half) is used for small group activity or as part of the organized basketball teams activity.

Pool Tables
This is one of the ‘games room’ activities and is used for individual entertainment or as part of a team challenge, night activity.

Table Tennis
Table tennis is not part of the organized activities but is available for students and teachers during free time.

Bush Walking
There are six separate ‘Nature Walk’ paths within the resort property. These can range from a simple 20 minute walk through our Rain forest Walk up to a 60 minute walk, by combining two or three smaller walks. (maps available)

Off site Activities

Beach Carnival
This activity takes approximately four hours (Double session) and is conducted at Tathra Beach. There are a number of ‘Iron Man’ type events with both team and individual awards. Students are instructed on surf safety practices and basic first aid.

Surf Lesson
This activity is conducted outside the surf club at Tathra beach. Learn To Surf Lesson (inc soft malibu boards, wet suit, and instructors ) . Price available on request.

River Expedition
This is a marine and environmental field study undertaken during a canoe journey from the mouth of the Bega River up to the quiet waters of Black Fellows Lagoon. It is a journey of discovery and personal challenge. This activity takes half a day and is carried out in groups of 15 students. An additional fee / student applies on this activity to cover the cost of equipment and additional staff. Price available on request.

Expedition Bush Camp & Coast Walk
An overnight camp at Kianinny Resorts camping gound. This option takes half a day and involves a combination of three activities and a 3 kilometre bush walk . After arriving around 1.00pm on the first day the group heads off on a bush walk through the “Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve” throughout the journey the group undertakes a variety of activities including basic navigation, marine studies and learning about the local culture. The students will head back to Kianinny Resorts camping ground where they will be provided with tents and shown how to set up a camp site. A camp fire meal is prepared by Kianinny staff along with the help of the students in the evening.

This Introduction to Expedition will introduce young Australians into an outdoor adventure and a journey. Here they will be shown and taught the basics of expedition while in a safe learning environment within or the nearby surroundings of Kianinny.
Along the way they will develop the outdoor and social skills by qualified, experienced and positive outdoor leaders who have expertise in the areas that groups will develop on our programs.
Learning outcomes will achieve;

  • Working together as a group. Team work and initiative will be an emphasis on group dynamics which will develop
while groups apply themselves to team based activities and
initiatives to create a report and individual personalities
    are realised.

  • Learning the procedures of minimal impact. This
will include setting up an overnight camp site, cooking,
toilet procedures, hygiene, respecting the wildlife,
    and responsible fire management.

  • Learning about local culture and the Australian environment and its
    inhabitants.

  • Cooking in the outdoors. This will be done by either Trangias (fuel
    stoves) or on a fire.

  • Basic navigation skills. An introduction to navigating for future expeditions.

  • Discovering duty groups. Duty groups are formed by smaller
individual groups and will have specific duties and shared
    responsibilities
so the group can, achieve as a group.

  • Becoming aware of the benefits of reflecting, while debriefing the
    day’s journey.

  • Having fun! The outdoor experience is always meant to fun.
‘‘It’s the choice you make that will determine the outcome!”
