Swim Lessons / Swimming Lessons | Edmonton RegionThe YMCA developed the first nationally- recognized aquatic programs in 1931, and has continued to train aquatic participants and leaders ever since. By fostering relationship building, YMCA aquatic programs create a positive atmosphere where members can both strive for and achieve their personal goals. We offer continuous swimming lessons, swim clubs, lifeguard training and swim instructor training, and several recertifications as well. At the YMCA, we believe the ability to swim is a critical life skill for every child, teen and adult. We use a variety of fun methods to help kids overcome fears, build confidence in the water and develop skills that last a lifetime.
YMCA aquatic programs teach participants how to be safe in and around water and give them the sense of accomplishment that comes from learning something new. Learning to swim is more than just stroke development; it is about building confidence and self-esteem, and developing strong values in our participants. Our highly-qualified swim instructors and lifeguards are trained in the philosophies and disciplines set by YMCA Canada and teach children how to swim safely, helping them to overcome their fears and to develop lifelong skills
YMCA memberships are all-inclusive and include a free swim lessons in our continuous swim lesson format (and a free swimming lesson in our session format at the Don Wheaton Family YMCA). This means your kids can learn to swim, meet new friends and stay active--at no additional cost. How do continuous swimming lessons work? Continuous Swim Lessons happen throughout the year on an ongoing basis. Once you've registered, the time slot is yours to keep even as your child moves to the next level. It enables participants to progress at an individual pace within a group. There's no need to re-register each season, either! Here are the additional benefits
A convenient, consistent swim time throughout the year. Your choice of day and time, which you may alter at any time. Continuous feedback with the emphasis on participation. YMCA Swim Instructors plan to meet the needs of each participant. More Choice, More Fun: children choose what they would like to learn from a list of optional skills, as well as learning the fundamentals. Individual Learning: Children are unique, and that’s why our swim instructors create diverse activities to support your child’s needs. Quality First: Children spend more time receiving feedback on essential skills. Practice only makes perfect if the skill is practiced correctly. Shorter distances will be used to learn effective techniques first, and then used to build endurance. Active and Wet: Children will engage in vigorous physical activity as they learn. YMCA Learn to Swim and Star Programs are designed for children to be 100% in the water and swimming. Seamless: Does the child want to be a Lifeguard? The YMCA Star Leadership Program incorporates the Lifesaving Society’s Canadian Swim Patrol Program for young lifesavers to nurture their potential lifeguard.
